I had been going through a lot of issues at home on and off for about 5-6 years. It ranged from physical abuse to emotional abuse to verbal abuse and I was always tolerating it. When i turned 17 I felt that enough was enough. I was tired of my mums outburst of abuse and felt that i had to leave for my safety as well as my mental health.
I felt really scared and nervous to leave home honestly. I knew my social worker was not doing the best she could and the only way to have freedom was by taking it on my own. I did my research on all of my rights from as many websites as possible and also notified my teachers about me no longer feeling safe and they supported me the whole way.
On a random Sunday I decided that I was going to leave home. I asked SafeCall for advice the day before and got the confidence to pack my things and leave whilst my mum was at work and my sister was asleep.
I marched down to the police station asking for help and they provided me with a temporary emergency accommodation whilst I awaited help from the council.
How I found help
I contacted SafeCall, who provided me with information as well as detail for when I would leave. I didn’t feel judged or misunderstood and I am forever grateful. I am now living in semi-independent accommodation and have more freedom to do as I like whilst building my relationship with my family from a distance instead of being in the same home.
