When you have nowhere safe to stay
Not having a safe place to stay can feel frightening, lonely, and overwhelming. Whether you’ve left home, been forced out, or are thinking about leaving, it’s important to know that you’re not alone—and there are people who care and want to help.
Different issues you can face
Homelessness can happen for many reasons, and it affects everyone differently. You might be:
- Sleeping rough or staying in unsafe places.
- Sofa surfing—moving between friends’ homes without a permanent place.
- Experiencing poverty, making it hard to afford rent or essentials.
- Escaping harm or abuse, with nowhere else to turn.
Whatever your situation, your safety and wellbeing matter.
Tips for Coping Without a Safe Place to Stay
If you’re facing homelessness or thinking about leaving home, here are some things that might help:
-
Reach out for support
You don’t have to go through this alone. There are a lot of organisations that can support you when you have no where to stay.
-
Keep your documents safe
This includes your ID, medical records, or other health information.
-
Stay in touch with someone you trust
Even if it’s just a quick message. Safecall can support with sending messages back to family or friends.
-
Take care of your health
This includes eating and drinking when you can, and staying warm.
